I am delighted to present to you the first issue of Seva Sandesh, a newsletter, the monthly progress report of good work done by SSF through your participation. Social institutions are a solid foundation of any society and, as such, play a defining role in the nation building process. They create the right kind of leaders. Through Seva Sandesh, I wish to bring to you insightful stories of anchors of change among us, who have pursued their passion and have made a difference in peoples’ lives, have wiped tears and brought smiles on people’s faces. We, as an institution, have created a positive impact across a wide range of fields – social welfare, education, healthcare, sports, science and technology, environment, art and culture, water conservation to name a few. I extend my heartfelt wishes to you and your families for the upcoming festive season and request for your continued participation in the initiatives of our institution.

15 years of Giving, Growing and Changing Lives

Celebrating 15 years of impactful giving, growing, and transforming lives, Seva Sahayog Foundation has reached a remarkable milestone. Over the past decade and a half, our journey has been defined by the unwavering commitment to uplifting underserved communities, fostering sustainable development, and empowering individuals to create lasting change.

On August 31, 2024, at Yashwant Bhavan, Lower Parel, Mumbai, we gathered to celebrate this inspiring journey with supporters, partners, and community members who have been integral to our success. This gathering was not only a celebration of achievements but also an opportunity to reflect on our journey and reaffirm our pledge to create lasting change. The event highlighted inspiring stories of growth, resilience, and the enduring impact of our projects across communities. As we look to the future, we are more determined than ever to expand our reach and continue changing lives, one initiative at a time. 

As we reflect on these past years, we are filled with gratitude for every donor, CSR partner, volunteer, and beneficiary who has been part of this journey. Together, we envision a brighter, more equitable future, striving to deepen our impact and reach even more communities in need.

Highlights Education

School kit : The Mumbai Chapter of Seva Sahayog Foundation organized the School Kit (SK2024) events as part of their annual initiative to support education for underprivileged students. The successful completion of these assemblies was made possible by the combined efforts of Seva Sahayogis, school teachers, NSS volunteers, CKH team members, corporate volunteers, and representatives from the Abhyasika and Kishori Vikas programs. A diverse group of volunteers, including students from Sanjay Hegde Sports Academy, contributed to this collective effort, demonstrating a strong community commitment to making a positive impact.

Samutkarsh : On September 1, 2024, Sevankur Bharat and Seva Sahayog Foundation’s Samutkarsh project successfully organized a medical camp across four districts in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region: Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad. The event attracted 924 students and 42 teachers, alongside 14 karyakartas and 29 swayamsevaks from Seva Sahayog Foundation. Additionally, 51 parents participated, demonstrating strong community support for the initiative. A key highlight was the involvement of 161 medical students from Sevankur Bharat, who ensured the camp's smooth operation. The event provided free medical check-ups, health screenings, and educational sessions, addressing various health concerns and promoting preventive care.

In Palghar district, the Samutkarsh Abhyasikas and Kishori Vargs organized impactful street plays in both the Saphale and Boisar divisions, focusing on key local issues such as water conservation and addiction awareness.

In Saphale, Tapi Abhyasika and Kiran Kishori Varg addressed water scarcity, which significantly affects girls’ education due to the time spent fetching water. In Boisar, the Shivpratap Abhyasika and Kishori Varg focused on educating rural communities about the dangers of addiction, with plays performed across multiple schools on Independence Day. These initiatives saw active participation from parents, students, and local youth, successfully engaging over 2,600 individuals and fostering community involvement in addressing these vital concerns.

KOW (Mobile Science Laboratory) In September 2024, the Knowledge on Wheels project made a significant impact, reaching 6,335 beneficiaries through various activities. Science sessions were conducted in 23 schools, benefiting 3,112 boys and 2,950 girls. Career guidance sessions were held in schools and communities, offering valuable insights to students. Additionally, a Ganesh Festival Camp and a paper bag activity were organized in local communities, engaging 22 males and 251 females in meaningful participation. These initiatives fostered education, creativity, and environmental awareness among students and community members.

Community Knowledge Hub (CKH) - During September, Seva Sahayog Foundation's Community Knowledge Hub (CKH) Center engaged actively with local schools, supporting 521 students through educational visits focused on skill development and resource access. On September 25, 2024, the Foundation celebrated the inauguration of a new CKH center, broadening its reach and commitment to empowering underprivileged students in collaboration with local educators and community leaders. This newly inaugurated center aims to enhance educational support, provide study materials, and offer digital learning resources tailored to student needs

Mini Science Center - In September, Mini Science Centers were installed in 226 schools across several states under various initiatives. Through the SBI ILM-REACH Vibrant Village Program, 94 schools received centers in Leh-Ladakh (25), Arunachal Pradesh (17), Sikkim (10), Uttarakhand (25), and Himachal Pradesh (17). General Insurance Corporation of India supported installations in 75 schools in Bihar (25), Madhya Pradesh (25), and Odisha (25). IOCL established centers in 10 schools in Dhenkanal, Odisha, while Arisma Charitable Trust/Aristo Pharma supported 15 schools in Jehanabad, Bihar. Additional centers were installed by Dover India in Tamil Nadu (5), Solar Energy Corporation of India in Jharkhand (5), NPCI in Madhya Pradesh (17), and IRCTC in North Sikkim (5). These efforts brought hands-on science learning opportunities to students across the nation.

Gyandeep - In September 2024, key activities were carried out across three schools, benefiting 1,325 students. Visits were made to Priyadarshini and Gyanoday schools, followed by an inspection of the smart boards. Six Science Practical sessions were conducted at Gyanoday School, while four remedial sessions took place at Priyadarshini and Bima Nagar schools, benefiting 26 boys and 53 girls. LOC, SSC results, and delivery challans were received in all three schools. Smart board panels were changed in Priyadarshini and Gyanoday schools, with software installation completed in Priyadarshini. Two smart boards were completed in Gyanoday, though one still awaits a software box. A comprehensive school checklist was prepared to ensure smooth operations.

Book bank - In September 2024, the Book Bank initiative welcomed 42 new students, providing essential academic resources to support their education. In Sanmitra and Sankalp Book Banks, the program conducted multiple distribution sessions, ensuring students had the necessary textbooks to excel. On September 4, books were distributed to 26 students, with additional sessions on September 11 and 18, reaching a total of 44 students during mid-month. Further distributions on September 21 supported 25 more students, while the final session on September 28 marked the largest single distribution, with books provided to 39 students.

Shiksha Vikas - On 11th October 2024, the three-month "Introduction to Social Work - Principles and Practices" course for VJTI students commenced at Crisil House, Powai, marking an exciting collaboration under the National Education Policy (NEP). Seva Sahayog Foundation (SSF) was honored to be selected by VJTI to conduct this co-curricular course, which has drawn 61 enthusiastic students committed to social impact. The course will cover key areas such as Education, Health, Tribal and Rural Development, Women and Children’s Welfare, and Disaster Management, through a series of lectures, presentations, and interactive activities. In the inaugural session, Kishore Moghe delivered the introductory lecture, with guidance and support from Dipali, Ram, Sagarika, and Vishal Desai, who serves as the course coordinator.

On October 19, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Seva Sahayog Foundation with CSR support of Black and Veatch Pvt. Ltd. (BVPL) collaborated on an impactful initiative supporting hearing-impaired students at Rotary School, Panvel. The project provided audio meters and instruments for speech therapy as essential resources, including hearing kits, two pairs of school uniforms, and e-learning support with a smart TV, as well as a refrigerator and two washing machines to aid school operations. This initiative, which was carried out successfully, received warm appreciation from the students and faculty. The event was graced by Black and Veatch’s Senior HR Director, India, Mr. Arvind Sharma, along with CSR Committee members Vaibhav Chavan, Abhijeet Tapise, and Yogesh Upadhyay.

Sanjay Hegde Sports Academy - On September 22, 2024, a special training session was conducted by our athletics coaches, featuring National-level throwing athlete Tejas Sir. Players received intensive training in javelin, hammer, discus, and shot put techniques, with several technical challenges effectively addressed. Lasting from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the session had been rescheduled from the previous day to allow for more comprehensive skill development. This dedicated practice aimed to enhance athletes' technical skills in preparation for upcoming competitions. The presence of Tejas Sir provided invaluable insights and motivation, inspiring our players to aim higher.

Highlights Empowerment

Gram Vikas - On October 15, 2024, the Sheti Shala session in Boisar Division brought together 25 farmers to embark on Rabi crop cultivation. With a focus on sustainable, low-water farming, the Foundation provided seeds and introduced effective seed treatment techniques to boost productivity. Agricultural experts explained the importance of seed treatment in protecting against fungal infections and pests, leading to better germination and crop resilience. A hands-on demonstration allowed farmers to learn the process firsthand, fostering a proactive approach to crop care. Farmers received guidance on best practices for sowing treated seeds and managing pest control.

Sanjay Hegde Skill Development Center - On October 9, 2024, a transformative Women Empowerment Workshop took place in Rampada, Shigaon, bringing together 35 women to explore new income-generating skills in agriculture, sewing, and food processing. The session began with guidance on sustainable Rabi farming, led by agricultural expert Rohan Shivde, who emphasized techniques for maximizing income from unused land during the dry season. Next, Ravi Dada introduced sewing as a flexible and profitable skill, showing how a few hours of work from home could yield greater earnings than traditional field labor. Lata Tai then shared her food processing journey, inspiring women to leverage culinary skills into small businesses. The workshop left attendees motivated to pursue these sustainable skills, paving the way for greater financial independence and building a supportive community of empowered women in Shigaon.

Kishori Vikas - Kishori Utsav, organized by Seva Sahayog Foundation's Kishori Vikas project, brought together adolescent girls and their mothers across locations like Shrivardhan, Thane, Safale (Palghar), Mahad, Boisar, and Birwadi. The event featured vibrant welcome songs, dances, the traditional Bhondla, and engaging games, creating a joyful atmosphere. Special guests shared inspiring messages, emphasizing education, health, nutrition, hygiene, and understanding good touch-bad touch. The mother-daughter bond was highlighted, emphasizing its role in supporting adolescent development. Through Kishori Poojan and group discussions, girls shared challenges and explored solutions. With participation across all locations, the event reached 1,065 beneficiaries, fostering awareness and unity while empowering young girls with valuable insights and community support.

Highlights Environment

Urban Forestation - This month, Seva Sahayog Foundation’s Urban Forestation Project saw enthusiastic participation from 139 dedicated volunteers, reflecting strong community support for creating greener urban spaces. In a significant development, new permissions were secured for forestation sites at FCI Panvel, Kandivali, and Parekh Nagar, with approval granted by the BMC. These sites will allow for expanded planting efforts, furthering the Foundation’s mission to improve air quality, biodiversity, and community well-being in urban areas.

Volunteer Engagement Activities

Paper bag - From October 14th to 18th, 2024, Seva Sahayog Foundation, in collaboration with our CSR partners, led a full-day, eco-friendly paper bag-making initiative across 23 locations in India. This hands-on activity engaged employees in crafting sustainable paper bags as a practical alternative to plastic. Guided by Seva Sahayog Foundation volunteers, participants learned essential skills in creating eco-friendly bags, emphasizing the importance of reducing plastic use in everyday life. The initiative reinforced a shared commitment to environmental responsibility, fostering sustainable practices and encouraging participants to adopt habits that positively impact the environment.

Career guidance - On September 23, 2024, from 10 to 11 a.m., Seva Sahayog Foundation held a career guidance session for 100 students from 8th to 10th grade at Shri Suryaji Pisal Vidyalay, Jambhul. Led by Seva Sahayog volunteer Mr. Vilas Wakhre, the session aimed to support students from rural backgrounds with limited educational resources. Five teachers and two additional Seva Sahayog volunteers from Badlapur also participated, ensuring that students received valuable insights and guidance to help shape their future career paths.

SapnoKiGullak - The Piggy Bank of my Dreams - During October, Seva Sahayog Foundation, with support from CRISIL Foundation, launched the #SapnoKiGullak (The piggy bank of my dreams) – a ‘gullak” painting activity at CRISIL House, Powai, Mumbai. This activity was also conducted simultaneously across other CRISIL office locations, namely, Pune, Gurugram, Chennai and Hyderabad. Over 500+ enthusiastic volunteers participated, including the leadership and senior management teams, creatively painting designs and adding taglines focusing on the importance of savings and financial discipline. resulting in -2,300+ piggy banks for the students. This hands-on activity was both engaging and impactful, promoting financial awareness and the value of savings in a fun and artistic way.

  2. Science Exhibition at Knowledge on Wheels Zones: An interactive exhibition across all Knowledge on Wheels zones, designed to ignite curiosity and foster a love for science among students, encouraging hands-on learning and innovation.
  3. Leadership Training Programs for Samutkarsh and Kishori Vikas Beneficiaries: Targeted leadership workshops to empower beneficiaries with essential skills, confidence, and knowledge, enhancing their ability to lead positive change within their communities.
